Seiko Epson has developed the world’s first High Definition 1080p 3LCD panel
14 September 2006
Seiko Epson Corporation (Epson) has launched a new LCD panel that further enhances the performance of its 3LCD projectors and large-screen LCD projection TV. The “Dream 6” series panel incorporates “Crystal Clear Fine” inorganic alignment layer HTPS technology and is designed for true-HD-ready (1080p) TV systems and home cinema projectors. The 0.7” panel, developed exclusively by Epson, will be developed for projector manufacturers worldwide.
As resolution and image quality is increasing so too are the availability of high-definition players and digital high-definition broadcasting. There is a new demand for products that allow high-resolution images to be viewed quickly and easily in the home, in particular those that offer a large screen with a dramatic impact. In order to meet these demands Epson has developed its D6 panels. They are the first panels to feature Epson’s “Crystal Clear Fine (C2 Fine)” inorganic alignment technology. The technology combined with the D6 panel delivers high-contrast, smooth images and a pure jet-black. The result is high-definition images and a performance surpassing anything that has ever been seen before.
Philip Oldham, Senior Product Manager Epson Europe says “The new 1080p panel marks a milestone in 3LCD development. The panel makes true HD viewing more accessible to home cinema or big screen enthusiasts than ever before. There is no doubt we will see a new range of home cinema projectors entering the market. It is an extremely exciting time for cinema in the home.
Technical features of Crystal Clear Fine Technology
C2 Fine is Epson’s original high-definition technology that realises high-contrast, with super-bright, high quality images by incorporating an inorganic Liquid Crystal alignment layer, and vertical alignment technology.
1. Use of vertical alignment technology achieves high contrast
2. Use of inorganic alignment layer reduces liquid-crystal orientation unevenness and produces smooth on-screen images
3. Use of normally-black mode and vertical alignment technology enables reproduction of jet black
Technical features of D6 Series (Hybrid Driving Technology)]
Mounting the horizontal driver IC, which have superior driving capabilities, and LCD driving controller IC on the tape on the panel achieves the following:
1. Improved writing characteristics
The superior driving ability substantially reduces the variance in writing characteristics onto pixels enabling uniform writing, thus producing smoother images.
2. Low power consumption
Lower power consumption of the panel driving system – approx. 1/10 that of preceding products (comparison with Epson’s preceding 1080p panel)
3. Reduction of space required by circuit board
By eliminating the necessity of mounting LCD driving controllers on a circuit board, the space required by the circuit board is reduced, enabling the whole set to be made compact.
